Chaglla Hydropower Station Strengthens COVID-19 Prevention Measures to Ensure Employee Safety; No Infections to Date

2021-02-02 14:53

BEIJING, Feb. 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Since Peru's first confirmed COVID-19 case appeared in March 2020, the Chaglla Hydropower Station, owned and operated by China Three Gorges, has implemented scientifically proven prevention and control measures to ensure the health and safety of its employees as well as the stable operation of the power station with not one single infection found.

The coronavirus outbreak in Peru coincided with the rainy season in the Huallaga River basin, which is an important period for hydropower generation. During the national health emergency, Empresa de Generacion Huallaga and Chaglla hydroelectric power plant continue to provide high-standard clean energy to the Peruvian national grid. As of August 2020, a total of 8,773,488MWh of electricity was generated.

The number of cases remains at zero thanks to rigorous measures implemented at the plant. The Chaglla project established a task force to take charge of routine prevention and control efforts. Administrators and plant doctors were designated as points of contact on epidemic prevention and control.

The station decreased the number of tours and visits to the plant with all company meetings conducted online. In terms of health and safety, the power plant put in place comprehensive measures to ensure that all public spaces and facilities, working areas and staff accommodations were well-ventilated and regularly disinfected.

Chaglla hydroelectric power plant has an infirmary with two doctors, one nurse, one caretaker as well as commonly used drugs and medical equipment. Two ambulances were rented to be on standby. The plant purchased COVID-19 medical insurance for employees and selected designated hospitals while also using a remote medical platform to overcome difficulties in diagnosis and treatment.

The plant not only strives to take good care of its employees, but also does its best to support villagers in the reservoir area. China Three Gorges Corporation Hubei Energy donated pandemic fighting supplies to local authorities, including 50,000 masks, 525 protective suits and ventilators.

The Huánuco government is grateful for the support from the Chinese people, saying: "China's successful experience has brought timely and effective assistance in our efforts against the pandemic, which makes us feel more confident about containing the spread". Empresa de Generacion Huallaga also provided  the first ventilator in Huánuco Province, in addition to a large number of masks, disinfectants, thermometers and protective suits.
