Hong Kong Snack Maker Brings the World's First Great Taste Award-winning Fruit and Vegetable Snack back Home to Hong Kong

2023-01-18 10:00

HONG KONG, Jan. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Emily Chu, founder of Hey! Chips, a premium fruit and vegetable crisps brand, is proud to announce the launch of her brand in Hong Kong. As a Hong Kong native, Chu has long been aware of the city's fondness for diverse and flavourful foods, from traditional dim sum to Michelin-starred dining and a plethora of street foods. However, she is also aware that many people in Hong Kong do not prioritise healthy eating.

Growing up in this metropolitan city, Chu observed how food companies enticed individuals with processed foods rich in indulgent flavours. In her teenage years, she faced health challenges and struggled with asthma and as such, she relied on regular medication to maintain a normal life. It was only after moving to New Zealand in her 20s that she discovered the benefits of consuming clean and natural foods, as nature intended.

"Like most people living in Hong Kong, I was hooked on the super-processed foods in the market. Most of these are loaded with 'badditives', as I call them, that make us consume more than we need and more often than we should."

- Ms. Emily Chu, Founder of Hey! Chips

The abundance of fresh produce in New Zealand encouraged Chu to eat natural and real foods, and she never fell ill once in the five years living abroad. She also stopped relying on her medication that she took since young. As she continued to practise clean eating after returning to city living, her good health persisted. Through this, Emily learned to appreciate the true meaning behind the words: "You are what you eat." Having experienced the change that a clean diet can bring, she feels the urgency to introduce better food options to her fellow Hong Kongers.

Hong Kong is not short of healthy snack options, but few products can compete with the tempting tastes of artificial flavours. To inspire more people to eat healthily, Chu invested $1.2 million HKD and spent 3 years of research to develop a snack with the perfect balance of nutrition and flavour. Hey! Chips was launched in Singapore in 2018 and has sold over 180,000 packs in 2022.

The Secret Behind The Signature Crunch

To Emily, the three most important qualities in a good snack are: simple ingredients, gentle processing, and unbeatable flavour. And in Hey! Chips, she delivered on all three.

Using NASA's food preparation method to dehydrate entire slices of fruits and vegetables at low temperature, Hey! Chips is able to preserve nutrients and reduce oxidation, while giving a delectable crunch. To ensure the purity and simplicity of the snack, Chu adopts direct sourcing by buying fresh ingredients directly from farms. This is a unique characteristic of Hey! Chips as most snacks would source their produce without considering their origins.

Even with unassumingly natural flavours, Hey! Chips has transformed simple ingredients into scrumptious snacks, receiving 7 Great Taste Awards through a series of blind tasting tests by top chefs and food critics at the UK Guild of Fine Foods in 2021 and 2022. This makes Hey! Chips the first fruit and vegetable crisps brand in the world to earn such a remarkable achievement.

Triumphant Entry into Hong Kong

Today, Hey! Chips has expanded to 8 overseas markets and is now teaming up with a major health food distributor, Organic Plus, to revolutionise snacking for Hong Kongers.

"I'm proud to bring Hey! Chips home! Eating healthy is never easy, especially in a city filled with exciting flavours. For a healthy snack to succeed, it needs to be truly delicious AND nutritious!"

- Ms. Emily Chu, Founder of Hey! Chips

Hey! Chips is available in close to 100 retail and online shops across Hong Kong. It has also won over several prominent Hong Kong public figures, including actress Celia Kwok and Miss Hong Kong Kayi Cheung.

Chu is passionate about creating more awareness of Hey! Chips in Hong Kong and would be honoured if media outlets would consider publishing her personal interest story. She believes that her mission and the unique characteristics of Hey! Chips would be highly beneficial to the Hong Kong readers.
